Our Staff
We have both civilian and military personnel at Navy Hospital, which serves all three branches of our Defence Forces.
Navy hospital began employing more civilian doctors, nurses and support staff in 1993, and continues to maintain the staff mix begun that year.
The Navy Hospital is also a training hospital: although their academic training is at the Joint Services Health School at Burnham Military Camp in Christchurch, Medics gain 'on-the-job' training here. When Navy Medics are ashore, they are usually assigned to medical duties at the Navy Hospital. They perform various medical duties that range from working in the outpatient department to helping in the operating theatre. Read about a Navy Medic's training and career.
The Navy's Medical Training Department operates from within the Navy Hospital to provide first aid and military medicine training for all Defence personnel. This helps them in dealing with injured people in situations ranging from workplace injuries (First Aid) to combat situations (Advanced Casualty Care). Training is conducted by New Zealand Resuscitation Council qualified Navy instructors.
